10th CONCAWE Symposium

The 10th CONCAWE Symposium was held in Brussels on 25th & 26th February 2013.

This event was attended by over 170 representatives from companies, national organisations, industry associations, universities, and the European Commission.

On the occasion of CONCAWE’s 50th Anniversary Year, the 2013 Symposium provided an excellent opportunity to look back at the association's scientific and technical contributions since 1963 and to review significant progress in the European oil refining industry's environmental performance over the past 50 years. The Symposium also offered participants a valuable opportunity to network with colleagues from within the oil industry and beyond. Two technical workshops at the start of the two-day Symposium provided more details on CONCAWE's work in the areas of air quality and well-to-wheels analysis.

Presentations covered the following main themes:

  • CONCAWE at 50 Years: looking back and looking forward
  • Environment and Emissions
  • Safety and Health
  • Petroleum Products and Pipelines
  • Refining and Fuels

A special feature of this year's event was a "Young Researcher" poster competition. The call for abstracts produced some very high quality submissions and, after an initial selection, 14 early-career researchers from 10 European countries were invited to attend the Symposium and present posters describing their research projects. A judging panel of CONCAWE experts selected the three best research posters and presented ‘2013 Young Researcher of the Year’ awards to Sandro Steiner (Adolphe Merkle Institute, CH), Kanchit Rongchai (University of Cambridge) and Jean-Baptiste May-Carle (IFP Energies Nouvelles).
