The cost and CO₂ emissions associated with the reduction of sulphur in EU road fuels have been evaluated using the CONCAWE EU refining model. The results are compared to those of a similar study carried out in 2000. In order to reduce sulphur in road fuels to less than 10 ppm, the EU refining industry is set to invest some 7 G€ while increasing its CO₂ emissions by 7.3 to 9.2 Mt/a.This is in addition to about the same investment and CO₂ emissions increase of13Mt/a to meet demand evolution.
