Generation of biodegradability data on petroleum constituents using enhanced tests (OECD guideline 301 F)

To improve the persistence assessment of petroleum substances, Concawe started a testing programme for several hydrocarbons. Ready biodegradability tests were proposed on six 3-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in accordance with the OECD 301 F protocol. Since these substances are difficult to test, bioavailability improvement methods were also used to increase their relevance.

The results obtained show that half of the constituents tested can be considered not persistent, with three of them requiring further testing to reach a conclusion. The data generated in this exercise have been submitted to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) for their consideration, and will be included in future PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) assessments of Concawe’s substances.
