CO2 emissions from EU refineries

The current focus on climate issues and, more specifically, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is generating much debate regarding emission sources and reduction options. Oil refineries are amongst the so-called ‘energy-intensive industries that do emit large quantities of GHGs, the vast majority of which is carbon dioxide, CO2.

In this article, we review the current situation in EU refineries with regard to energy consumption and CO2 emissions, their evolution in the past few years and the factors that will affect them in the future. We also consider the mitigating options available to the refiners.
